From Startup to Staffing Powerhouse: A Chat with Neil Burton, Mash Staffing's Co-Founder & Managing Director

The Inspiring Journey Behind Mash Staffing: A Conversation with Co-Founder Neil

When we think of successful companies, we often focus on the product or service they provide. But behind every great business, there's a story—a journey filled with challenges, opportunities, and passionate individuals. In this post, we dive into the story of Mash Staffing, one of Australia's leading event staffing agencies, through a conversation with its co-founder, Neil. His journey is a testament to the power of collaboration, seizing opportunities, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

The Genesis of Mash Staffing: A Friendship Turned Business

The story of Mash Staffing begins not with a grand business plan or a gap in the market, but with a friendship. Neil’s inspiration to co-found Mash Staffing didn’t stem from a desire to disrupt the industry, but rather from the influence of his business partners, Phil Edelston and Julian Johnson. These two had already made a name for themselves in the UK by establishing Mash as a recognized brand in the hyper-competitive staffing market.

"Watching Phil and Julian grow Mash from a startup into a top name in UK staffing was incredibly inspiring," Neil recalls. "Their entrepreneurial spirit and the way they built the business fueled my own excitement."

This camaraderie and mutual respect led Neil to partner with them when the opportunity arose to expand Mash into Australia. The timing couldn’t have been better. Around the 2010 football World Cup, Sony 3D TVs and their agency partner, Iris, presented an opportunity to launch an office in Sydney. For Neil, this wasn’t just a professional opportunity—it was a chance to bring the Mash ethos to a new market, supported by a foundational client and the backing of trusted partners.

Establishing a Foothold in Australia: From Vision to Reality

Launching a business in a new market is never easy, but Neil had a clear vision. He didn’t just want to replicate what Mash had done in the UK; he wanted to bring something new to the Australian event staffing industry. Drawing from his background in media and experiential agencies, Neil focused on what he knew clients wanted: impactful events driven by brilliant, well-prepared staff.

"We aimed to bring a broader perspective into staffing," Neil explains. "It wasn’t just about providing staff but about leveraging our expertise to make events and activations more impactful."

This approach helped Mash establish a foothold in the competitive Australian market. While there were already solid agencies in the region, Mash differentiated itself by offering more than just staffing. They brought a level of professionalism and expertise that resonated with clients, especially in experiential, conference, and activation agencies.

Navigating Industry Evolution: Changes and Challenges

Since its inception, the Australian event staffing industry has undergone significant changes, and Mash Staffing has evolved with it. Neil Burton recalls how, in 2010, the bar to entry was relatively low. A simple Excel spreadsheet with names and numbers could get you started. But by 2024, the landscape had shifted dramatically.

"The industry now has much more regulation around hourly rates, award rates, and the employment status of staff," says Neil. "Employing staff as casual employees rather than contractors, ensuring payment of superannuation, and managing tax—these are all now necessary structures to ensure fairness as dictated by Fair Work Australia."

These changes have been pivotal in creating a more structured and fair environment for event staff, but they’ve also posed challenges for agencies like Mash. Scaling the business, particularly through full-time headcount, has been a significant hurdle. The event staffing industry can be demanding, making it difficult to find and retain talent who share the company’s vision.

"Attracting and retaining talent is always a challenge," Neil admits. "But we’ve focused on building a business that works for both our team and the staff on the ground. When they’re supported and motivated, they can deliver their best."

Maintaining Consistency Across Cities: A Unified Approach

One of Mash Staffing’s key strengths is its ability to operate across several major Australian cities while maintaining a consistent level of service. This consistency is no accident; it’s the result of a clear and unified approach to client briefs and staff expectations.

"Consistency comes from putting our staff in the best position to succeed, no matter where they are," Neil explains. "It’s all about making them feel comfortable and confident so they can deliver brilliant work."

This approach ensures that whether an event is in Sydney, Melbourne, or any other city, the quality of service remains high. For Mash Staffing, the success of an event doesn’t just depend on the number of staff provided but on the quality of their performance and how well they represent the brands they’re working with.

Passion for People: The Heart of Mash Staffing

Mash Staffing’s company tagline, "Our passion is people and their potential to enhance event and brand experiences," isn’t just a marketing slogan—it’s the driving force behind everything they do. This philosophy is reflected in their day-to-day operations and their commitment to supporting their staff.

"We’re all about putting the best available staff out there, making sure they know what success looks like, and supporting them to be the best version of themselves," says Neil. "Creating a comfortable environment for our staff helps us tap into their potential and get the best out of them at events."

This focus on people has led to some truly memorable moments for Mash Staffing. Neil recalls two standout events: the 2010 World Cup live site in Darling Harbour, where the business was launched, and the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Being involved in such high-profile, once-in-a-generation events has been incredibly rewarding and has solidified Mash Staffing’s reputation in the industry.

Adapting to a Post-Pandemic World: Resilience and Relationships

Like many businesses, Mash Staffing faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. With events coming to a standstill, the agency experienced a drastic drop in revenue—twice. However, Neil attributes their survival to strong client relationships and the ability to adapt quickly.

"It was tough, but we leaned heavily on government support and our 10-year trading history," Neil shares. "Our established relationships allowed us to reignite the business quickly as things started to recover."

Key partnerships with clients like Polestar and Uber and their agencies, Design Team and Yakusan, were instrumental in helping Mash restart operations post-lockdown. These relationships, built on years of trust and collaboration, proved invaluable during a time of crisis.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Technology and Sustainability

As Mash Staffing continues to grow, Neil sees technology playing an increasingly important role in experiential marketing and event staffing. Tools that capture customer interactions more effectively, such as pedestrian trackers and dwell time analytics, are becoming essential in demonstrating the value of face-to-face marketing.

"There’s real potential in using technology to better track customer engagement," says Neil. "These innovations will help us showcase the impact of our work more clearly."

In addition to embracing technology, Mash is also focused on sustainability and continuous staff development. The agency is committed to minimizing its environmental impact while ensuring that its team is always ready to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing industry.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead for Mash Staffing

As Mash Staffing looks to the future, Neil’s goals are clear: continued growth, involvement in the biggest and best events in Australia, and expanding their network of clients. With an eye on the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, Mash aims to provide more opportunities for the best staff in the industry and continue enhancing event and brand experiences across the country.
